This is a rewarding second career for me after more than 25 years as a high school teacher at George School, a Quaker boarding and day school in Newtown, PA. I moved from contributing in a classroom to contributing in a delivery room and I find great fulfillment in this role. |
| I was fortunate to have a natural birth with my spouse present for each daughter in 1970 and 1973, and this experience drew me to join the professional doula community. I achieved my certification with DONA in December 2004 and I have provided labor support for over 40 births. |
| I decline births due in July and August in order to spend time at our farmhouse in rural Maine. My spouse is an historian and college professor, so the academic calendar is embedded in our genes. |
| Pam England’s approach to childbirth, beautifully laid out in her book Birthing from Within, most appeals to me. In June 2005 I traveled to Toronto for a three-day workshop with one of Pam England’s trainers that prepared me to use the “BfW toolbox” in pre-natal sessions with my clients. |
